What Would Jesus Bomb? A Slacker Uprising Review

Ramen Anyone?

Ramen Anyone?

He gave it away for free like a cheap slut and what great idea. I don’t think a better idea has been cooked up by Michael Moore in a long time. Sure the production values aren’t there. There are no cute radical cartoons, or how-the-hell-did-he-land-that-guest interviews and the video quality leave much to be desired. But you shouldn’t care about this. Because one does not go into a Michael Moore movie like one goes into a Michael Bay movie. This documentary is about the message as are all of Moore’s movies.

Slacker Uprising doesn’t rock the vote, it propels it sky high. Moore’s dry wit isn’t lost in the production since straight from the credit he calls his mission a failure; a failure in 2004 maybe, but not in 2008. Slacker Uprising is a direct visitation upon that old Machiavellian rule of power; those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Only this advice is not for the candidate but rather for the voters as Michael tries whole heartedly to get a young generation to vote for the first time.

Many critics have already shitcanned this movie for being an exercise in self-aggrandizement and narcissism on the part of Moore. But then how else will the media react to someone who told them they were tools of the republican propaganda war-machine? The documentary does heavily focus on Moore but this serves only to mirror the behavior of a nation divided on issues. Moore is only the echo of a nation torn up by a failed government and its failed policies. That’s the role of the Jester in the court, to mock the king. It seems this notion is lost on many and as Moore notes, the Republicans have no sense of humor.

This is no better described in two key scenes where Moore becomes belligerent. At first in an early scene when a reporter insinuates that his new movie Fahrenheit 911 is propaganda. He just tears the entire room full of reporters a new asshole for deeply failing at their job of safeguarding public information by calling them tools of the republican party for not asking the tough questions and finding deplorable that people had to pay 9$ to have access to the information by seeing his movie. I can’t do the scene justice.

And then in the face of republican hecklers he tells the crowd not to boo them but to welcome them and that when the democrats are in power they would still be allowed, despite their aberrant and deviant way of thinking be allowed to marry and reproduce, again I do it no justice, his sarcasm and dry wit simply cannot be reproduced. But the cherry on the Sunday comes when Christians start praying out loud and he shuts them up and gets them to leave by asking them: What would Jesus Bomb? The most salient moment of the documentary.

The Slacker Uprising goes on like this for 62 cities right up until the night before election. Republicans tried everything they could to stop the rallies. Some going to court, some bribing university officials up to one hundred thousand dollars to prevent him from speaking. When one businessman succeeded in banning Moore from a college campus, the students found a venue capable of receiving ten times more people and it sold out. Good on ya Mr. Republican.

When it was all over, George Bush still won, but by slimmest victory ever and Kerry got the youth vote. So maybe Moore had a play in this, maybe he didn’t but the documentary makes some compelling arguments and should motivate some people to get up and vote. At least I would hope so. Moore may like to call himself a loser but this one’s a winner… again.

Michael Moore is a total douche. I agree the man has wonderful intentions, but we all know where that can lead…

Meanwhile, we’re about to elect a POTUS who isn’t even a fucking natural citizen (or if he is, he certainly has not provided documentation proving such). I guess the Dems won’t be happy until they finish the job dismantling the U.S. Constitution…

    Oh Armageddon, where art thou?

To paraphrase Jack’s Joker… “This [world] needs an enema…”
