This is the documentary in which Ken Miller, from my previous post, mentions going to court in Dover. This is the BBC doc on the whole case with interviews with Richard Dawkins, David Attenborough, Ken Miller and many others. Not 2 hours, only 45 minutes and mucho informative.

Ken Miller Tears Intelligent Design Apart.

December 31, 2007 DAVE ID 2 comments

Ken Miller’s talk on Intelligent Design at Case Western University. Ken Miller basically rips Intelligent Design apart in a 2 hour long exposé of the claims of intelligent design and the tactics that creationists employ to get it shoehorned into the American school system. (From YouTube)

It’s 2 hours long, but Miller is hilarious and entertaining enough to make it fly by. Worth your time, you’ll learn a lot of stuff and arm yourself against creationists.

Submission, ‘Part 1′

Submission, ‘Part 1′ By Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Theo Van Gogh.

Theo was murdered shortly after this film was released, with his throat slit and a note pinned to his body with a knife.

Like a pantomime, I’m speechless. Time to start a feminist revolution in Islam and liberate them all… oh yeah.

Benazir Bhutto, 1953-2007. – By Christopher Hitchens – Slate Magazine

Benazir Bhutto, 1953-2007: Daughter of Destiny

…She would have been in a good position to know about this connection, because when she was prime minister, she pursued a very active pro-Taliban policy, designed to extend and entrench Pakistani control over Afghanistan and to give Pakistan strategic depth in its long confrontation with India over Kashmir…

First, keep Wikipedia and Merriam-Webster close at hand, Hitchens, ever the pedantic wonder boy doesn’t fail to use his big words again.

But he offers an alternative view on Bhutto which I find interesting. I keep in mind that he’s a right-wing nutter – though my second purchase of his books is waiting for me on my shelf; The Portable Atheist. He accuses Bhutto of supporting the Taliban/Al-Qaeda and then accuses them of killing her thus making Gen. Pervez Musharraf who would have faced Bhutto in coming elections days away, irreproachable. I’m sorry Mr. Hitchens, but there’s your Cui Bono.

Either way, Hitchens articles are always a great read and this one, short as it is doesn’t disappoint.

Racism on PostSecret

No I’m not saying that PostSecret is racist. But this morning I found this PostSecret:

The sender resents black America because every Darfur activists he knows is white. Well god damnit get dem porchmonkeys out right now. Wait what?

Maybe the sender lives in a mostly white area? Maybe there’s no black community in his area? Maybe the black community in his area is ostracized by a still racist white majority and they don’t feel like mixing with you crackers for any reason and think you parading those Save Darfur signs are hypocrisy. There are still unresolved issues between black America and white America and your PostSecret loudly demonstrates it.

And on a funny note, I went on Google Images and typed in Darfur Protests and the majority of images that popped up in my search results were images of black people in the US at Darfur Protests. So your sentiment is only a perpetuation of latent racism.

In the same PostSecret though there was a more touching PostSecret:

Review: The best (and worst) films of 2007 – 300 is what?

Review: The best (and worst) films of 2007 – CNN.com

300
Frankly, it was a tossup for the third spot between this gung-ho Greek meatfest and Michael Bay’s overblown toy commercial, “Transformers.” A lot of people got off on both, I realize, and the computer-generated work was impressive in its way. But no matter how you spin it, war porn is war porn — and we’d better off without it

This is blasphemy, this is madness. 300 war porn? What the fuck? OK let’s address something right away. When Joss Whedon coined the term Torture-Porn in reference to the movie Captivity, I knew that the term would catch on. Because Whedon, genius that he is, always influences pop-culture in subtle ways. But I can see that it’ll become the new saveur du jour with critics panning anything with excess like 300.

300 isn’t war porn, it’s a movie that isn’t marketable. No product placement, too much violence to promote or show on TV, too much blood and guts, too much implied homosexuality, orgies, too much everything but it was all done in an aesthetically pleasing manner. The film is just a work of art to behold over and over again. And ultimately, which Tom Charity failed to understand, 300 wasn’t about war, it was about honor and strength of character.

It’s an allegory, not just a straight pipe hack and slash. This is what makes 300 different from say Resident Evil or other such ultra-violent movies like the afore mentioned Captivity. You forgive the violence and splashy blood work because it all has a purpose deeper than simple, mindless entertainment and the promise to peek at Elisha Cuthbert’s nipples poking through a tank top.

And seriously, Captivity was better than 300? Come on dude!
